Removing
–  Remove the gearbox → Rep. gr.34.
–  Remove sump (bottom section) → Chapter.
–  Remove rear sealing flange → Chapter.
–  Remove oil pump → Chapter.

–  Pull out the plug -1-.
  A17-10421
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-.
  DANGER!
Injury risk! The chain tensioner spring for oil pump drive jumps from sump (top section) to timing chain cover (bottom) when detaching sump (top section). Do not reach between sump (top section) and timing chain cover (bottom) when removing sump (top section).
  N17-10200
–  Remove bolts -1 to 13- and detach sump (top section).
  Caution
First lift the top part of the oil pan onto the side of the gearbox. Take care timing chain cover is not bent when levering off.
Installing
l  Tightening torque → Chapter
t  Silicone sealant: → Electronic spare parts catalogue.
  Note
t  Observe use-by date of the silicone sealant.
t  The sump (top section) must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  Replace the bolts tightened using goniometrics.
t  Always replace seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts
  A17-10415
–  Take the extractor -T10118- and pull the spring of the chain tensioner for the oil pump drive in the direction of the -arrow-.
–  Secure the spring by inserting the testing equipment for brake pad wear -VW 136- into the borehole of the guide rail as shown in the figure.
–  Remove sealant remaining on cylinder block with flat scraper.
  WARNING
Protect eyes against injuries.
Wear safety goggles.
  N17-10163
–  Remove sealant residue on sump (top section) using rotating plastic brush or similar.
  Note
Check if timing chain cover is deformed. For this purpose, first fit sump (top section) without sealant and determine gap between cover and sump (top section). If the cover is deformed and cannot be straightened, renew cover after installing sump (top section).
–  Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
–  Check oil passages in sump (top section) and crankcase for contamination.
  A13-0590
–  Cut off the tube nozzle on the front marking (diameter of the nozzle approximately. 3 mm).
  A17-0081
–  Apply silicone sealant onto clean sealing surface of sump (top section) as illustrated -arrows-.
t  Thickness of the sealant grub: 2 to 3 mm
  Note
t  The sump (top section) must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant can enter the sump and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe.
l  Sump (top section) and crankcase must be flush at gearbox end.
–  Immediately fit sump (top section) and tighten bolts, tightening torque → Fig..
  A17-10275
–  Fit bolts -arrows-. Tightening torque → Item
  N17-10200
–  Pull brake pad wear tester -VW 136- out of guide rail -arrow-. The spring now returns to installation position.
–  Install rear sealing flange → Chapter.
–  Fit the oil pump → Chapter.
–  Renew baffle plate.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
–  Fill up with engine oil and check the oil level → Booklet301.
