Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench (5 - 50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-

t  Hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-, see equivalent → Anchor
removing
–  Observe the safety precautions before starting work → Chapter.
  Note
Before disconnecting the battery the fuel tank cover must be opened and, if necessary, take the wheel lock adapter out of the boot.
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. Check the anti-theft code in this case.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery earth lead → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
If necessary, drain the tank → Chapter.
–  Remove the seat base → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. Gr.72.

–  Remove the covers and detach the electrical connectors -arrows-.
–  Remove the cardan shaft → Final group 02Q; Rep. Gr.39.
–  Remove rear right-hand side wheel.
–  Remove the rear right-hand side wheel housing → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.66.
–  Loosen the securing bolt of the fuel tank cap unit, and remove the unit → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.55.

–  Dismount the filler neck from the chassis -arrows- and remove the wire from the filler neck.
  WARNING
Fuel supply pipes are pressurised. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.

–  Remove the adapter wire of the four wheel drive control unit -J492-.

–  Separate the fuel hose -2- (black) and the vacuum -1- (white) in the fuel tank right front part, pressing the clip to unlock it.

–  Remove the support straps and the securing bolts. During this operation, support the fuel tank with the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.
–  Slowly lower the fuel tank.
  Note
You should “remove” the filler neck between the chassis and the rear axle. For this lower the fuel tank from its position in the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-, with the help of a second mechanic.
Fitting

–  Clip on the fuel tank the wire of the four wheel drive control unit -J492-.
–  With the help of a second mechanic you must insert the filler neck between the rear axle and the chassis. Later place the fuel tank over the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.

–  Raise the fuel tank slowly until its mounting position and fix it via the screws -arrows-.

–  Attach the adaptation wire of the four wheel drive control unit -J492-
Installation in reverse order, take into account the following note
t  The breather and fuel hoses are to be installed without any kinks.
t  Do not interchange supply and return hose (return hose blue or blue markings, supply hose black). → Fig.
t  Ensure that wiring connections are securely seated.
t  Check the earth connection between fuel tank/bodywork at the filler neck. → Fig.
