Draining off and filling coolant t  Draining → Anchor t  Filling → Anchor

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Refractometer -T10007A-, see equivalent → Anchor

t	Base -VAS 6340-, see equivalent → Anchor

t	Coolant charger -VAS 6096-, see equivalent → Anchor

Draining   WARNING Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully. –  Open the cap of the coolant expansion tank. –  Separate the under body protection. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.

Altea, Altea XL, Leon –  Remove connector -1- on the coolant temperature sender -G83- at the radiator outlet. –  Remove the retaining clip -arrow- and the connection nozzle from the radiator.

Ibiza –  Loosen the spring-type clip -arrow- and remove the coolant hose.   Note Please observe requirements for disposal. Drain the coolant from the cooling system of the supercharging air cooling.

Altea, Altea XL, Leon –  Separate the hose (quick-release fastener) -arrow- from the lower connection support of the low-temperature of the charged air cooler.

Ibiza –  Loosen the spring-type clip -arrow- and remove the coolant hose.   Note Please observe requirements for disposal. Filling   Caution For mixing only tap water must be used. Well water does not have the required quality to ensure the coolant's function.   Note t  With the range of models later than 2008, only Gº12º plus-plus anti-freeze agent must be used according to standard TL VWº774ºG. t  The range of models up to and including 2007 can use Gº12º plus anti-freeze agent, according to TLºVWº774ºF and Gº12º plus-plus, according to TLºVWº774ºG. t  G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with G 12 plus antifreeze agent. Both agents are coloured mauve. t  „TLºVWº774ºG“ or „TLºVWº774ºF“ anti-freeze agents prevent damage from rust, freezing or lime sediment, and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. For this reason, the cooling system must be filled with coolant additive all year round. t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates. t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate). t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %. t  If a higher anti-freeze rate is required due to the climate, the percentage of the coolant additive can be increased. However, the percentage only up to 60 % (anti-freeze at -40 ℃); otherwise, frost protection decreases again and cooling efficiency is also impaired. t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant. The recommended mixture ratio (use only tap water to mix the coolant):

Altea, Altea XL, Leon –  Press the connection support against the cooler and insert the retaining clip in the groove -arrow- –  Connect the connector -1- to the radiator outlet coolant temperature sender -G83-.

Ibiza –  Push the coolant hose on the connecting hose and fix using the spring-type clips -arrow-. –  Fit the engine anti-splash cover. With cooling system filler -VAS 6096- –  Fill the coolant loop using the cooling system filler -VAS 6096- → Instruction manual for the cooling system filler for the coolant circuit VAS 6096 Without cooling system filler -VAS 6096-: –  Switch off air conditioner and heating.

–  Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank. –  Carry out the → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connection and the guided function „Fill the cooling system and bleed the air“.   WARNING Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully. –  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant level should be at the max. mark and, when the engine is cool, the level must be between the MIN and MAX marks.
