Indications regarding repairs to the ABS
  WARNING
Basically, the antilock braking system does not require maintenance.
Inspections, fitting and repairs must only be carried out by personnel specialized in these systems.
If the indications described in the Repair Manual are not respected, damage may occur in the braking system and vehicle safety may be affected.
ABS: Diagonal distribution system, double circuit hydraulic brake with electronic differential lock. The vacuum servo brake pneumatically increases the braking force.
The mechanical braking force distribution for vehicles with the Mark 60 ABS has been replaced by a software in the control unit, especially designed to determine the braking forces between axles.
Faults in the ABS system do not affect the conventional brake system or the servo brake. The conventional brake system remains functional even without ABS. However, a change in braking behaviour must be reckoned with. When the ABS indicator is lit, using the brakes could cause the rear wheels to lock up before expected.
t  Before making repairs to the antilock braking system, locate the problem using the self-diagnosis.
t  Release the connector from the hydraulic unit only when the engine ignition is out of service.
t  If a new hydraulic control unit is fitted then it must be programmed → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  The hydraulic braking system must be purged of air after being manipulated. For systems with ABS/ESP Mark 60: The bleeding of air from the system - SAT 1175B- must be done with the brake bleeder → Chapter.
t  Always strictly follow the relevant safety measures and instructions when handling the brake liquid.
t  Work on the ABS system demands the highest levels of cleanliness; under no circumstances should auxiliary materials that contain mineral oils such as oil, grease etc. be used
t  Make sure that brake fluid does not enter the connectors.
t  Before soldering electronic connections they should be thoroughly cleaned, but do not use strong abrasive cleaning products such as brake cleaner, petrol, solvents or similar products.
t  When the repair work is not carried out immediately, protect the parts with care and keep them covered. Use the plugs of the repair set for this purpose, part number → Spare parts catalogue.
t  Place removed parts on a clean surface.
t  When the brake system is open, the vicinity of the location should not be cleaned using compressed air. As a safety measure, do not move the vehicle.
t  Only use lint-free cloths.
t  Only use parts from their original packaging.
t  Only remove new parts from their packaging immediately before fitting.
t  When carrying out varnishing work: due to safety reasons the control unit may not be set at a temperature of above 85° for more than 2 hours.
t  Before using electric welding equipment, note the relevant safety measures and indications according to → Rep. gr.00.
