Removal:
–  Remove wheel.
–  In case of vehicles with light width control, the coupling rod of the sender for vehicle level must be released before removing the coil spring, shock absorber and left mounting bracket unit by opening the holder clamp from track control link. → Chapter.

–  Remove clip -1- with a pair of pliers.
  Note
This clip does not have to be re-installed.
–  Remove nut -2-, take out hexagon bolt and pull both links out upwards.
  WARNING
Do not attempt to enlarge slots in wheel bearing housing using a chisel or similar.
For a uniform appearance of the right side
  A40-0212
–  partially remove the rubber seal -2- out of the plenum chamber cover in the direction of the -arrow-.
–  Remove the water box cover -1- towards the front.
Continued:
  E50-10587
–  Remove cover -arrow- for bolt.
  A40-0376
–  Unscrew hex. head bolt -arrow- from bumper/supporting link connection.
–  Swivel the wheel bearing assembly to a side.

–  Thread off the hexagon bolts -1- of the water box.
–  Coil springs, shock absorbers and mounting bracket as one unit
  WARNING
In doing so, do not damage the protective sleeve of the steering!

So as not to damage the joints of the lower links, support must be provided for example by way of the engine and gearbox lifter -V.A.G 1383 A- with support tool -T20209 - to prevent excessive rebound.
Installation
  E40-10231
–  Place coil springs, shock absorbers and mounting bracket as one unit on the suspension turret. Tighten hexagon bolts -1- → Item.
  Note
See that the washers are properly mounted.
–  Bonded rubber bushes can only be turned to a limited extent. The mountings of the suspension links must therefore only be tightened when the suspension is in the unladen position → Chapter.

–  Insert the fork joint of the shock absorber on the transverse link and tighten the screw joint -1- → Item.
  Note
The screw must point against the direction of travel.

–  Fit joint pins of both upper links in wheel bearing housing and press down as far as possible by clamping with special tool -T40067 -.

–  Install and tighten new bolt -2- and self-locking nut → Item.
–  On vehicles with headlight range control, fit coupling rod for vehicle level sender on track control link → Chapter.
–  Mount the wheels and the tighten the wheel bolts → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr. 44
