Retainer (transport lock)
Retainer (transport lock)
New replacement steering columns are fitted with a transport lock.
This transport lock must be removed after installing the steering column in the vehicle.
If a used steering column is removed and re-installed, an assembly aid is required during removal to prevent the top and bottom sections of the steering column from pulling apart while being detached from the steering box. Use a cable tie or length of wire as an assembly aid.
The splines will separate if the upper and lower sections of the steering column are pulled apart or telescoped together too far.
Rattling noise may develop while driving if the splines are no longer engaged in their original position.
