Removing and installing suspension strut
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with universal gearbox support -V.A.G 1359/2-
t  Shock absorber set -T10001-

Removing
–  Note or request radio code on vehicles with coded radio if necessary.
–  Remove battery.
   
–  Remove trim / air duct -1--arrows-.
–  Remove trim -2- for battery.
Left suspension strut
If the left-hand suspension strut is to be removed then additional work is required.
  N40-0109
–  Unbolt battery trim with cooling system expansion tank -arrows- and lay to side without opening cooling system.
The work sequence continuation is valid for both sides
–  Remove water tank seal.
–  Lift vehicle until the load on the front axle is relieved.
–  Remove hexagon bolt for drive shaft.

Remove hexagon nut for upper shock absorber mounting.
–  Assemble the tool outside of the vehicle and then mount it onto the suspension strut.

–  Raise vehicle and unbolt wheel.
  N40-0452
–  Unbolt coupling rod -1- from shock absorber tube. Do not twist the joint bellows when unbolting.
–  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under wheel bearing housing.
  N40-0110
–  Loosen bolt -arrow- until it is no longer in contact with the subframe.
–  Lower wheel bearing housing with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- as far as possible.
While lowering, make sure that the drive shaft is pushed out of the wheel hub.

–  Remove bolt -arrow-.
–  Swing suspension strut with wheel bearing housing outwards.
–  Pull suspension strut upwards out of wheel bearing housing. The slot on the wheel bearing housing may be widened using an appropriate tool to make removal easier.
Installing
  N40-0107
–  Push wheel bearing housing onto shock absorber tube until notch in shock absorber tube -arrow- aligns with hole.
–  Bolt wheel bearing housing to shock absorber tube. Use new bolt!
Continue installation in reverse order.
