General notes
The weight of the vehicle causes the tyre to flatten out slightly. As the tyre goes round, the rolling surface and the entire radial structure become misshapen. If the tyre pressure is too low, the forced deformation is greater, implying increased temperatures and greater resistance to rolling. This leads to greater wear and increased risk from the point of view of safety.
Example: standard tyre pressure given according to load with tyres cold.
Pressure (bars)Pressure (%)Useful life (%)
2,3100100
1,98085
1,46060
1,04025

In turn, tyre pressures which are too high lead to above average wear and a reduction in driving comfort. We therefore recommend maintaining the tyre pressure specified by the manufacturer.
  Note
t  The diagrams shown are not applicable in all cases. They are merely intended to give an idea of the wear rates of tyres on the front and rear axles and with front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
t  The values obtained for useful life may differ considerably depending upon the conditions of service and the running gear.

As can be seen from diagrams 1 and 2, the tread of new tyres wears more in a set time period than that of very used tyres. After the first 5,000 km it is not possible to estimate the total useful life of tyres, as the line of wear is not lineal.
In front-wheel drive vehicles, the tyres must not only transmit guidance and driving forces, but also the majority of the transversal and braking forces. For this reason, the front wheels of front-wheel drive vehicles wear faster than the rear wheels. Uniform wear of all the tyres can be obtained by regularly interchanging the front and rear wheels. Interchanging wheels → Chapter.
