Note!

t	If the vehicle has a security-coded radio, obtain the anti-theft code from customer before disconnecting the battery.

t	To disconnect and reconnect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Multi-purpose tool -VW 771-

t	M10 threaded rod x 50 mm

Removing:

–	Remove driver side airbag unit → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.69.

–	Remove trim under steering column switch.

–	Remove trim over steering column switch -arrows-.

–	Pull connector off steering lock housing.

–	Remove bolt -arrow- for steering column switch.

–	Pull connectors off steering column switch.

–	Remove steering column switch.

–	Pull immobilizer reader coil -D2- off steering lock housing.

–	Pull steering column as far as possible out of column tube.

–	Remove bearing ring -2-.

1 -	M10 threaded rod, approx. 50 mm long.

2 -	Manufacture locally if necessary, e.g. use a M10 bolt and cut head off.

–	Remove multi-purpose tool -VW 771- from steering column.

–	Drive off steering lock housing.

Installing:

–	Fit steering lock housing on column tube.

–	Fit bearing ring on steering column.

–	Pull steering column as far as possible out of column tube and hold in this position.

1 -	Press bearing ring against ball bearing in steering lock housing when pulling out steering column.

2 -	M10 threaded rod, approx. 50 mm long.

–	Remove multi-purpose tool -VW 771-.
