Dangers when handling vehicle batteries
Recognition and avoidance of dangers
The handling of batteries is dangerous. These dangers can be avoided if the warnings on the battery, in the Operating manual and in ELSA are heeded.
  WARNING
t  Personnel with little experience, for example apprentices or placement personnel, should only carry out work on batteries under the supervision of specialist personnel such as experienced mechanics or workshop supervisors or electricians specialized in the automobile field.
t  Battery electrolyte is very corrosive and caustic. If the battery is incorrectly handled, there is a danger that personnel may be affected by the electrolyte. For this reason, always provide adequate products that may be used to treat burns caused by the electrolyte. For example, soap solution represents a suitable agent for the treatment.
t  If acid leaks from the battery, this may lead in burns to the skin, the intake of acid and corrosion to the vehicle. In the latter case components necessary for vehicle safety may be damaged.
t  Flammable gas is produced while charging the battery, also, there is gas build-up while the battery is at rest following charging; this gas is explosive. In extreme cases, if handled carelessly, the battery may explode due to the build up of explosive gas.
t  In batteries where the magic eye of the is transparent or light yellow must be replaced. They should not be tested nor charged, you should not perform a jump start. The risk of explosion exists upon testing and charging or performing an auxillary start.
t  All sanding, welding or cutting work is prohibited close to the battery due to the risk of sparks; never approach the battery with any object that many ignite gasses (for example a lit cigarette). Avoid sparks caused by static electricity charge. Always touch the bodywork before touching the battery.
