Testing databus (CAN bus)
Testing databus (CAN bus)
Operation
Two data BUS circuits with a different priority are integrated in the electrical system of the vehicle:
t  Drive CAN databus
t  Convenience CAN data bus
Indication of which control unit is connected to the data BUS drive or data BUS Comfort: → Current flow diagrams and Fitting locations; → Electrical System; Rep. Gr.90.
The control units are connected via two twisted data BUS cables (CAN_High and CAN_Low) and exchange information (messages). Both the engine control unit and the other control units detect missing information on the data BUS as faults.
Other information: → No.24
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand multimeter (e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A-)
t  Adapter cable set (e.g. -V.A.G 1594 A-)
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-
Test conditions
l  A data BUS fault was detected by the engine control unit.
l  Coding of all control units o.k.
Test sequence
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Unlock connector at engine control unit and unplug.
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to the engine control unit → Chapter. The control unit wiring loom is not connected.
–  Test the central terminating resistor in the engine control unit.
–  Perform resistance measurement between the test box sockets 20 + 21.
   Specified value: 60…72 Ω
If the resistance is not within the specified range:
–  Replacing engine control unit → Chapter.
If the resistance is within the nominal value range:
–  Test databus cables → Electrical System; Rep. Gr.90.
