Testing catalyst efficiency
Testing catalyst efficiency
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552 -
t  Diagnostic cable -V.A.G 1551/3, 3A, 3B, 3C-
Test conditions
l  The fuel pump relay must be OK.

l  Fuses No. 3 and No. 9 must be O.K.
l  Coolant temperature minimum 80°C
l  No leaks in exhaust system between catalytic converter and cylinder head
Check for proper operation
–  Check display group 046 → Chapter.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
–  Read out readiness code → Chapter.
–  If the fault memory has been erased or if the continuous voltage supply from the engine control unit was interrupted, it is then necessary to re-generate the readiness code → Chapter.
  Note
t  This test is intended for vehicles with electrical system control unit. It provides information on possible damage to the catalytic converter.
t  If “Cat R1 N.O.K.” is shown in display field 4, it is not yet necessary to replace the catalytic converter.
t  Replace catalytic converter if it does not meet emission limits or if there is visible damage.
If the catalytic converter does not meet the emission limits or if the catalytic converter has visible damage:
–  Replace catalytic converter → 1.4/55; 1.4/59; 1.4/74 Engine - Mechanics → Rep. Gr.26.
If “CatR1 o.k.” is displayed:
–  Select function 06 “End output” and switch off ignition.
