  Note
t  Always replace the cylinder head bolts.
t  There must not be any oil or coolant present in the holes for the cylinder head bolts.
t  Remove the new cylinder head gasket from its wrapping immediately before fitting.
t  Treat the new seal with the utmost care. Damage to the silicone layer and in the area of the bead results in leakages.
  WARNING
Wear protective gloves and goggles when working with gasket remover and degreasing agent!
–  Make sure that when cleaning the cylinder head and cylinder block no foreign bodies can get into the cylinder or into the oil and coolant galleries.
–  Carefully remove old sealant residue from the cylinder head and cylinder block using a chemical sealant remover.
–  Before fitting the cylinder head position the crankshaft on TDC marking.
–  Turn crankshaft back against the running direction of the engine until all pistons are almost evenly at TDC.
   
–  Check whether the both dowel sleeves -1- that guide the cylinder head are located in the cylinder block, if necesarry insert.
–  Position the new cylinder heads. The legend (part number) must be legible.
–  Position cylinder head, insert all cylinder head bolts and tighten by hand.

–  Tighten cylinder head in four stages in the following order:

–  Pre-tighten with the torque wrench to 35 Nm.
II
–  Pre-tighten with the torque wrench to 60 Nm.
III
–  Using a rigid wrench torque a further 90° (1/4 turn).
IV
–  Using a rigid wrench torque a further 90° (1/4 turn).

–  After securing the cylinder head or the camshaft timing gear turn the camshaft in such a way that the cams for cylinder 1 point upwards evenly. Set the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine to the TDC before attaching the timing belt → Chapter.
–  After installing the cylinder head, fill tandem pump and cylinder head with fuel using a hand vacuum pump and ventilation reservoir → Chapter.
The further assembly is carried out in reverse order to disassembly.
–  Interrogate fault memory and erase → 1.9/96 TDI Engine, Fuel Injection; Rep. Gr.01.
–  Checking the oil level → Fabia.
