Removing and installing exhaust gas turbocharger
Removing and installing exhaust gas turbocharger
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Pliers for spring strap clamps
  Caution
In case of mechanical damage to the exhaust gas turbocharger, e.g. damage of the compressor wheel, it is not sufficient to only replace the exhaust gas turbocharger. In order to prevent consequential damage to the engine, perform the following tasks:
t  Clean all oil lines.
t  Change engine oil and oil filter.
t  Check air filter housing, air filter element and charge air pipes as well as charge air hoses for soiling.
t  Check all the air guides and the charge air cooler for foreign bodies.
If foreign bodies are detected in the charge air system, the complete charge-air routing must be cleaned and if necessary the charge air cooler must also be replaced.
  Note
t  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
t  Observe general instructions for charge-air system → Chapter.
Removing
–  Remove the sound dampening system → Body Work; Rep. Gr.50.
–  Remove drive shaft to the right → Chassis; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Unscrew the propeller-shaft guard from the cylinder block.

–  Remove screws -3- and disconnect connecting hose -2- on the charge-air cooler -right arrow-.
–  Remove connecting hoses -1- and -2-.
  S10-0147
–  Remove connecting hose -arrow-.
  S21-0075
–  Unscrew the oil return line -3- from the cylinder block.
–  Release the screws -1- and -2- and remove the support for exhaust gas turbocharger.
–  Remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum unit for charge pressure control.
–  Remove pre-exhaust pipe with catalytic converter → Chapter.
–  Unscrew oil feed line from exhaust turbocharger and from exhaust manifold and lay it to one side.
  s21-0076
–  Lift the engine cover at the sides -arrows A- and pull out towards the front -arrow B-.
–  Removing top rear charge-air pipe → Chapter.
–  Connection pipes for inlet connection - remove exhaust manifold for exhaust gas recirculation → Chapter.
–  Remove heat shield from exhaust manifold.
–  Unbolt exhaust manifold from cylinder head → Chapter.
–  Remove exhaust turbocharger with exhaust manifold downwards.
Install
Installation occurs in reverse order. Pay attention to the following:
  S10-0374
–  When installing the air guide with push-fit coupling ensure that the locking clip -arrow- interlocks behind the retaining lugs -A-.
–  Checking the oil level → Fabia.
  Note
t  Tightening torques → Chapter
t  Replace the gaskets, the sealing rings and the self-locking nuts.
t  Fill exhaust turbocharger with engine oil through the connection fitting of the oil feed line.
t  Observe the assembly instruction for hose connections with push-fit couplings → Chapter.
t  Hose connections and hoses of the charge air system must be free of oil and grease before being installed.
t  Secure all hose connections with corresponding hose clips.
t  After installing the exhaust turbocharger, run engine at idling speed for about 1 minute to ensure that oil is supplied to the exhaust turbocharger.
