Testing throttle valve control unit -J338-
The housing of the throttle valve control unit -J338- contains the following components:
t  Throttle valve drive -G186-. The electric motor driven by the engine control unit. This electric motor opens the throttle valve against a spring force.
t  Angle sender 1 for throttle valve drive -G187-
t  Angle sender 2 for throttle valve drive -G188-
  Note
t  The housing of the throttle valve control unit -J338- must not be opened.
t  The angle senders are designed a potentiometers (variable resistors). The senders indicate the position of the throttle valve on the engine control unit fully independently from one another.
t  The potentiometers cannot be mechanically adjusted. The setting is undertaken with the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- in function 04 “Initiate basic setting”.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3, 3A, 3B nebo 3C-
t  Hand multimeter (e.g. -V.A.G 1715 -)
t  Adapter cable set (e.g. -V.A.G 1594 A- or -V.A.G 1594 C-)
Test conditions
l  The throttle valve must neither be damaged nor dirty
l  Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C
Test sequence
–  The functional test of the throttle valve control unit -J338- can be carried out via the function “Read measured value block”, display group 062 → Chapter.
If the specified values are not reached:
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Disconnect the plug from the throttle valve control unit -J338- → Chapter.

–  Measure the throttle valve drive resistance on the throttle valve control unit - J338- between contacts 3+5.
   Specified value: 1…5 Ω
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Replace the throttle valve control unit -J338-.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Test voltage supply → Chapter and cables to throttle valve control unit -J338-. Pay special attention to the plug connections that may be loose or corroded.
