Replacing flange shaft gasket rings
Replacing flange shaft gasket rings
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Ejection lever -MP 3-418-
t  Pressure plate -T30033-
t  Torque wrench (5...50 Nm), e.g. -V.A.G 1331-
t  Catch pan
t  Sealant -D 176 404 A2-
Removing
–  Remove noise insulation below engine/gearbox → Engine, Mechanics; Rep. Gr.10.
t  Before replacing left gasket ring:
–  Removing drive shaft → Running Gear; Rep. Gr. 40.
t  Before replacing right gasket ring:
–  Turn steering to full right lock.
–  Unscrew the drive shaft from the flange shaft.
–  Tie up the drive shaft as far as possible. Avoid damaging the paintwork on the drive shaft during this operation.
t  Proceed as follows for both gasket rings:
–  Position the catch pan under the gearbox.
–  Release fixing screw for flange shaft, to do so secure flange against turning.
–  Remove the flange shaft with pressure spring.
–  Pull out seal ring for flange shaft with ejection lever -MP 3-418-.
   
–  Drive the new seal ring in up to the stop, do not twist the seal ring.
–  Moisten the space between the sealing lip and dust lip with ATF.
–  Coat screw head of conical screw with sealant -D 176 404 A2-.
–  Install flange shaft, tighten screw to 22 Nm.
  Note
t  The lengths of the left and right flange shafts differ. These are not interchangeable.
t  Only remove and install one flange shaft in order to prevent the large differential bevel gears in the differential gear from turning.
–  Screw the left drive shaft or right drive shaft to the flange shaft.
–  With the gearbox installed, checking and topping up ATF level → Chapter.
Tightening torques
  S39-0198
Flange shaft on gearbox (conical screw)22 Nm
Tighten drive shaft to flange shaft
diagonally across in 2 steps (I and II) to M8 → Note		I - 10 Nm
II - 40 Nm

1)  Always replace these bolts
