Removing –  Before disconnecting the battery determine the code of radio sets fitted with anti-theft coding. –  Disconnect the earth strap from the battery with the ignition off. –  Remove battery and battery tray → Electrical System → Rep. Gr.27.

Gearshift mechanism until 10.04 –  Remove catch for shift cable -A- and selector cable -B- with open-end wrench and pliers from the gearbox (only then, if the catches for both cables or shift cable and selector cable should be replaced). 1 -  Open-end wrench size 13, commercially available 2 -  Pliers, commercially available If the above-mentioned components are not replaced:

–  Pull forward the locking mechanism at selector cable and at shift cable as far as the stop -direction of arrow 1-, then lock by turning to the left -direction of arrow 2-.

Gearshift mechanism as of 11.04 –  Remove circlip -3- for the shift cable from gearbox shift lever -1-. –  Pull off shift cable from the stud. Metal relay lever –  Remove circlip -4- for the selector cable from relay lever -2-. –  Pull selector cable off the stud Plastic relay lever

Separate cable lock from selector cable. In order to avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable lock must be separated from the selector cable before removal. –  Pull forward the locking mechanism as far as the stop in -direction of arrow 1-, then lock by turning to the left in -direction of arrow 2-. –  Press the relay lever to the front (-direction of arrow 3-). Continued for all gearshift mechanisms

–  Disconnect the Bowden cable support from gearbox -arrows-.

–  Lever the collar out of the surround of centre console -arrows-. –  Pull the collar upwards over the gearshift knob.

–  Open clamp -arrow- and pull off gearshift knob together with the collar. –  Remove centre console → Body Work → Rep. Gr.68.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- attaching the shift housing.

–  Detach tunnel bridge -1- below the exhaust system. –  Unclip the lambda probe line from clip -2-. –  Remove protective cover -3-. –  Separate exhaust system at the double clamp -4-. –  Unbolt bracket -5- for front silencer. –  Unhook the front exhaust pipe from the assembly carrier. –  Remove heat shield -6-. –  Swivel shift housing down and remove with control cables.
