Installing and tensioning
  Note
When rotating the camshaft, the crankshaft must not be positioned at TDC. Risk of damaging valves and pistons.
Precondition
l  The pistons must not be at TDC.
   
–  Bring the marking on the camshaft sprocket in line with the marking on the cylinder head cover (TDC for cyl. 1).
–  Fit toothed belt onto crankshaft toothed belt sprocket and coolant pump (pay attention to direction of running).
–  Fit engine support bracket on the cylinder block.
   Tightening torque: 45 Nm
  Note
Install support with inserted screws.
–  Install the middle and bottom timing belt guard, replace screws.
   Tightening torque: 10 Nm
–  Install toothed belt/vibration damper.
   Tightening torque: 40 Nm
–  Bring the marking on the vibration damper in line with the marking on the bottom part of toothed belt guard (TDC for cyl. 1).

–  Check whether the marking on the flywheel and the TDC marking are aligned -arrow-.
I - Manual gearbox
II - Automatic gearbox (is not mounted)
–  Install engine mount, replace screws.
–  Align unit mounting for engine → Chapter.
Tightening torques → Chapter.
–  Remove supporting device -MP9-200 (10-222A)-.
–  Install coolant expansion reservoir.
–  Install PAS reservoir.
–  Fit timing belt onto camshaft sprocket and tensioning pulley.
–  Tension timing belt → Anchor.
Further installation occurs in reverse order to removal.
Tightening the timing belt
Precondition
l  Crankshaft is on TDC for cylinder 1.

–  Before tensioning the toothed belt, rotate the tensioning pulley at the eccentric with the -T10020- two-hole nut turner 5 times in both directions as far as the stop.
–  Tighten the timing belt. Rotate at the eccentric with the two-hole nut turner -T10020- in -direction of arrow- as far as the stop.
–  Slacken the timing belt until the notch -1- and the pointer -2- are positioned opposite (use mirror).
–  Tighten securing nut to 25 Nm.
–  Rotate crankshaft a further two revolutions in direction of rotation of engine until the engine is again positioned on TDC for cylinder 1. When doing this, it is important that the last 45° (1/8 turn) are rotated forcefully without any interruption.
–  Once again inspect tension of toothed belt.
Specified value: Pointer and notch are positioned opposite.
