Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spring tensioning device, e.g. -V.A.G. 1752/1-
t  Spring holder, e.g. -V.A.G. 1752/3-
Removing:
  Note
To remove the left spring it is necessary due to lack of space for the spring tensioner e. g. -V.A.G. 1752/1- to partially remove the rear silencer.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Partially remove the rear silencer (unhook) → Engine; Rep. gr.26
  Note
   
t  Ensure that the spring holders are positioned as close as possible to the spring coils.
t  During the tensioning operation, ensure that the spring holders are correctly located at the spring coils -arrow-.
t  Do not use impact screw driver.

–  Use spring tensioner e.g. -V.A.G. 1752/1-.
–  Tension coil spring sufficiently until it can be removed.
–  Remove coil spring.
Installing:
  Note
t  Coil spring is installed together with top rubber base.
t  Pay attention to colour coding.
t  Absolutely pay attention to the fitting position of the helical springs → Anchor.
–  Check the zinc base of the bottom spring for damage, replace if necessary.
  Note
t  Install the helical spring together with the top rubber base.

t  The beginning of the spring must be positioned at the stop at the top rubber base -arrow-.
Fitting position of the coil springs:
  Note
t  Fitting position of the coil springs is identical for vehicles with drum brakes as for vehicles with disc brakes (drum brake is shown).
t  Before attaching the coil spring to the spring tensioner e. g. -V.A.G. 1752/1- it is essential to pay attention to the fitting location on the axle, as shown in the fig S42-0346.

–  The spring coil end must be installed at the axle in the specified position -arrows-. The bottom spring coil end must always point forwards in direction of travel.
–  Install helical spring with spring tensioner.
–  Release the helical spring and take out spring tensioner.
–  Check the prescribed fitting position of the spring or repeat the procedure.
–  Install the rear silencer → Engine; Rep. gr.26
