  Note
t  Do not remove the plastic bases supplied as a protection for the open valves until just before fitting on the cylinder head.
t  When replacing the cylinder head, replace all the coolant → Chapter.

4 - Vacuum pump
  WARNING
The vacuum pump must on no account be disassembled, otherwise the proper operation of the pump vacuum part is no longer assured. This will result in a failure of the brake booster.

5 - 9 Nm
6 - 9 Nm
7 - Coolant temperature sender -G62-
8 - Connection fittings
q   for coolant
9 - Sealing ring
q   replace
10 - Clamp
q   check tightness
11 - 23 Nm
12 - Support
13 - Cylinder head gasket
q   replace
q   Pay attention to the marking → Fig.
14 - Cylinder head
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   after replacing fill entire system with fresh coolant
15 - Glow plugs, 17 Nm
16 - Cylinder head bolt
q   pay attention to sequence for loosening and tightening → Chapter
q   before fitting insert washers in the cylinder head
17 - Oil pressure switch -F1-, 22 Nm
q   Marking: green
q   Switching pressure 0.03 ... 0.06 MPa (0.3 ... 0.6 bar)
q   Cut open gasket ring if leaking and replace
q   check → Chapter
q   removing and installing → Chapter

   
Inspecting the cylinder head for distortion
–  Inspect cylinder head at several points for distortion using a knife-edge straightedge and feeler gauge.
l  Max. permissible distortion: 0.05 mm
  Note
It is not permissible to rework the cylinder heads of diesel engines.

Identification of the cylinder head gasket
t  Part number -arrow 1-
t  Control code -arrow 2- (ignore)
t  Bores -arrow 3-
  Note
t  Differing thicknesses of cylinder head gaskets are inserted according to the piston projection. If only the gasket is replaced, then it must be replaced with a new gasket with the same marking.
t  When installing new pistons or a partial engine, determine the piston projection at TDC → Chapter.
