Removing and installing glow plugs
Removing and installing glow plugs
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Flexible-head wrench SW 10, e.g. -3220-
t  Cleaning and degreasing agent, e.g. -D 009 401 04-
t  Protective goggles and gloves
Test conditions
l  Engine is cold
l  Ignition is switched off
Work procedure
–  Remove engine cover → Chapter.
   
–  Open the catches -arrows- of the cable guide and expose the wiring loom.

–  Disconnect plug -6- at fuel pressure sender -G247-.
  Caution
t  Carefully disconnect the plug from the glow plugs.
t  If the plug is damaged when disconnecting it, the complete wiring loom including the plugs must be replaced (plugs cannot be replaced separately).

–  Carefully disconnect the plug from the glow plugs. Use the assembly spanner SW 12 for help.
  WARNING
Wear protective gloves and protective googles when working with grease remover!
–  Clean the glow plug and the hole in the cylinder head with great care.
  Note
No dirt must get into the cylinder.
When cleaning, for example:
1.  Suction off heavy dirt using a vacuum cleaner.
2.  Spray grease remover and cleaning agent onto the glow plug and into the hole around the plug, let it take effect for a short period of time and blow out with compressed air.
3.  Clean the glow plug and the channel around the plug with a cloth soaked in oil.
–  Slacken the glow plug with a flexible-head wrench 10 -3220- and release.
Install
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the following points:
  Note
t  Before installing the glow plug, remove dirt and deposits from the bore in the cylinder head and from the thread.
t  Do not oil or grease the threaded bore in the cylinder head as well as the glow plug thread.
–  Screw the glow plugs into the cylinder head by hand using the flexible-head wrench -3220-.
–  Tighten glow plugs to 16 - 18 Nm.
–  Fit the plug again onto the relevant glow plugs and check for firm seating.
–  Interrogating and erasing fault memory of engine control unit → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
  Note
After deleting the fault memory of the engine control unit the readiness code must be checked, if necessary re-generated.
