Testing the engine operating conditions
Testing the engine operating conditions
  Note
The inspection focuses on whether the engine control unit - J361- recognises the engine operating conditions.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3A-
Test condition
l  Coolant temperature minimum 80 °C.
Test sequence
–  Connect vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- and select engine electronics (address word 01); engine runs in idle → Chapter.
   
Read-out on display (function selection):
–  Enter 08 for the function “Read measured value block” and confirm entry with the Q.

Readout on display:
–  Enter 001 for the “display group 001” and confirm entry with Q.
Readout on display:

Enter display group number    XXX
(1 to 4 = display fields)
–  In display field 2 check whether the coolant temperature is above 80°C.
–  Switch in display group 005 as follows:
–  Press the button C.
–  Enter 005 for the “display group 005” and confirm entry with Q.

Engine operating condition (display group 4):
t  Idling:
   In idle operation display field 4 must display “idle”.
t  Partial load:
–  Accelerate constantly.
   Display field 4 must display “partial load”.
t  Trailing throttle:
–  Engine speed must increase to more than 3000 rpm.
–  Then close the throttle valve promptly.
   Display field 4 must display “trailing throttle”.
t  Full load:
–  Briefly apply full throttle.
   Display field 4 must display “full load”.
  Note
t  To obtain the display full load, it may be necessary to perform a test drive.
t  A second mechanic is required for the test drive.
  WARNING
Secure the vehicle system tester to the rear seat and operate from that position.
–  Press → key.
–  Enter 06 for the function “End output” and confirm the entry with key Q.
If the specified values are not reached:
–  Interrogate fault memory, rectify any faults existing and erase the fault memory → Chapter.
–  Check accelerator pedal position sender -G79- → Chapter.
–  Inspecting throttle valve control unit -J338- → Chapter.
