Removing and installing, tightening the timing belt
(Set the timing)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench, e.g. -V.A.G 1331 (5 až 50 Nm)-
Removing
–  Remove V-ribbed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove belt pulley and top and bottom part of toothed belt cover.
–  Set crankshaft to TDC → Anchor.
–  Mark the rotation direction of the timing belt.
–  Slacken tensioning pulley and take off timing belt.
Install
   
–  Place camshaft sprocket to marking -arrow A-.
For vehicles up to engine No. 518016
–  Position crankshaft on TDC cylinder 1. The chamfered tooth on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket must correspond with the marking on the sealing flange -arrow B-.
For vehicles as of engine No. 518017
  N13-0047
–  Position crankshaft on TDC cylinder 1. The chamfered tooth -arrow 1- on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket must correspond with the marking on the 2V sealing flange -arrow 2-.
Continued for all engines
–  Fit on the toothed belt. If the timing belt has been used pay attention to the direction of rotation.
  S13-0208
–  Installing tensioning pulley and tighten fixing nut -4- by hand. The recess of the base plate -1- must be located over the fixing screw -2-.
–  Tension the toothed belt in the direction of the arrow by turning the tensioning pulley until the pointer -3- is positioned over the notch in the base plate -arrow-.
–  Tighten the locking nut on the tensioning pulley. Tightening torque: 20 Nm
–  Turn the crankshaft twice in the running direction of the engine, position again on TDC and check the setting.
–  Install top and bottom part of toothed belt cover.
–  Install belt pulley.
–  Install the V-ribbed belt → Chapter.
–  Inspect ignition point, adjust if necessary: → 1.6 ltr./55 kW Engine - 1AV Fuel Injection and Ignition System; Rep. Gr.28
