Check engine speed sender

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552 - with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-

t	Handheld multimeter, e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A -

t	Measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A -

t	Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-

Note

t	The engine speed sender is at the same time a speed and reference marking sender.

t	For functional test of the engine speed sender see also → Chapter, display group 003, display field 1.

Check engine speed sender

Fitting location of the sender and the plug connection → Chapter.

–	Before testing check the sender for correct installation and tight fit.

–	Disconnect the plug connection of the engine speed sender (identification: grey plug connection).

–	Connect hand multimeter (resistance measurement) to contact 2 and 3 of the plug for the engine speed sender.

Specified value: approx. 450 to 1000 Ω

–	If the nominal value is not reached, replace the engine speed sender.

–	If the nominal value is reached, connect hand multimeter to contact 2 and 1 (earth) as well as to contact 3 and 1 (earth).

Specified value: ∞ Ω

–	If the nominal value is not reached, replace the engine speed sender.

–	If the nominal value is reached, test wiring between plug and engine control unit as follows:

–	Connect the test box -V.A.G 1598/22 - to the wiring loom of the engine control unit → Chapter.

–	Check wiring between the test box and the 3-pin plug for continuity according to the Current Flow Diagram.

For all vehicles

Specified value: max. 1.5 Ω.

–	If the nominal values are not reached, eliminate short-cicuit or line interruption between sender plug and plug at engine control unit.

–	If there is neither a line interruption nor a short-circuit; replace engine control unit → Chapter.
