Adjusting the kick-down function > < Coding engine control unit
Adapt the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit
Adapt the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit
For engine with engine identification characters AGU
Special tools, test equipment as well as aids required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-, 3A, 3B or 3C
The adaptation teaches the engine control unit the stop positions of the throttle valve control unit with the ignition on and the engine stopped and a comparison characteristic between the throttle valve potentiometer and the throttle valve positioner.
Adaptation must be performed in these instances:
t  if the voltage supply of the engine control unit was interrupted (e.g after disconnecting the battery)
t  if the throttle valve control unit -J338- was removed and installed
t  if the throttle valve control unit was replaced -J338-
Test condition
l  No fault in fault memory → Chapter
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 volts
l  All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heater, must be switched off
l  Throttle valve must be in idling speed position
l  If the vehicle is equipped with CCS, the setting must be OK
Test sequence
–  Connect vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- and select engine electronics control unit (address word 01) → Chapter. The ignition must be on.
–  Select function 04 “initiating basic setting” and also the display group 098.

After pressing the Q key, the throttle valve positioner is operated in min., max. and five intermediate positions and the control unit stores the respective throttle valve angle in the permanent memory. This procedure takes up to 10 seconds.

System in basic setting 98 ->
   2.20 V 2.80 V Idling ADP running
Readout on display:

System in basic setting 98 ->
2.20 V 2.80 V Idling ADP O.K.
If the following message is shown on the display, the adaptation was aborted.
  Note
t  If the basic setting is aborted by the control unit, this may be due to the following reasons:
t  The throttle valve does not reach the mechanical idling limit due to dirt, e.g. carbon deposits or an incorrectly adjusted throttle control cable.
t  The battery voltage is too low.
t  The throttle valve control unit or the wiring is defective.
t  After the basic setting has been aborted, the fault “1796” or “17973” is stored in the fault memory. When the ignition is switched on again the basic setting is automatically performed again.
–  Deactivate adaptation by pressing the button .
–  Check specifications for throttle valve control unit in measured value block, display group 023 → Chapter. If the specified values are not reached, repeat the adaptation of the control unit.
–  Interrogate fault memory (Function 02) → Chapter.
–  If no fault is detected, check whether the idle switch opens and closes when operating the accelerator pedal, test idle switch.
–  Ending output.
For engine with engine identification characters ARZ, ARX, AUM
Adjustment of the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit on vehicles with E-gas system
This adaptation teaches the engine control unit the various positions of the throttle valve with the ignition on and the engine stopped. These positions are stored in the engine control unit. The acknowledgement of the throttle valve location occurs via the two throttle valve drive angle senders.
  Note
The engine does not start during the automatic adaptation.
Special tools, test equipment as well as aids required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-, 3A, 3B or 3C
Requirements:
l  No fault stored in fault memory, interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
l  Engine not running, ignition switched on.
l  Accelerator pedal not pressed.
l  Coolant temperature above 5°C, but below 95°C.
l  Intake air temperature below 100°C.
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 V.
Procedure
–  Connect vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-. Switch ignition on and select address word 01 “Engine electronics” → Chapter.
–  Select function 04 “Initiate basic setting” and select display group 060.
After pressing key Q, the throttle valve positioner will be switched.

Basic setting 98                      ->
2.20 V 2.80 V Idling ADP ERROR
Check specified values for throttle valve control unit in display fields 3 and 4.
Specification in display field 3: 8
Specification in display field 4:
ADP runs
ADP o.k.
  Note
t  The abbreviation “ADP” in display field 4 stands for “Adaption”, which in fact means adaptation.
t  If the adaptation is aborted by the engine control unit, this may be due to the following reasons:
t  The throttle valve cannot be fully closed (e.g. dirt).
t  The battery voltage is too low.
t  The throttle valve control unit is defective or the wiring is not O.K.
t  The engine is started during the adaptation or the accelerator pedal is pressed.
t  Wraping of the throttle valve housing (check screwed connection).
t  After the abortion the tester displays “function unknown or cannot be performed”. When the ignition is switched on again (a few seconds) the adaptation is automatically performed again.
–  End basic setting of the engine by pressing key .

System in basic setting 60 ->
