Checking charge pressure control
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Turbocharger tester (e. g. -V.A.G 1397 A -)
Test conditions
l  No leaks at inlet and exhaust side.
l  Engine oil temperature at least 60°C
Test sequence
The charge pressure is measured under full load while driving or on the roller type test stand. Test duration per measurement max 10 seconds.

–  Connect the “T” piece with test hose of tester -V.A.G 1397 A - between fuel pressure regulator and front of intake manifold.
–  Pull the test hose through under the engine bonnet and pull it through the right window into the interior.
–  Switch on measuring range I.
  Note
t  Use of tester see Operating Instructions.
t  The hoses must be connected absolutely leaktight.
t  If the charge pressure is measured while driving have a second person operate the tester for safety reasons.
t  Make sure that the pressure hose is not trapped between engine bonnet and body.

–  Measure charge pressure at full load:
Vehicles fitted with a manual gearbox
–  Accelerate vehicle in 3rd gear at full throttle from 2000 rpm and press the button -M- on the tester at 3000 rpm.
t  Specified value: 0,15 ... 0.16 MPa
Vehicles with automatic gearbox
–  Drive off with selector lever position 2.
–  Accelerate up to 2500 rpm and wait until the gearbox has shifted into 2nd gear.
–  Push the gas pedal through to the Kick-down position (the gearbox does no longer shift back at this speed/rpm) and at 3000 rpm press the memory button -M- at turbocharger tester.
t  Specified value: 0,15 ... 0.16 MPa
If the charge pressure is exceeded:
–  Check the solenoid valve for the charge air pressure limitation -N75- (Throughflow in the hose from the exhaust turbocharger to the pressure unit for pulled-out connectors).
–  Check hoses for tightness and contact assignment: for engine identification characters AGU, ARZ → Chapter, for the other engine identification characters → Chapter.
–  Testing charge pressure control valve pressure unit → Chapter.
If the charge pressure drops below:
–  Charge pressure control solenoid valve -N75- → 1.8-ltr./110 kW engine - fuel injection and ignition system Motronic; Rep. Gr.24.
–  Test turbocharger divert air valve -N249- → 1.8 ltr./110 kW engine, fuel injection and ignition system Motronic; Rep. Gr.24.
–  Testing charge pressure control valve pressure unit → Chapter.
–  Check the stroke switch-off valve → Chapter.
–  Check hoses for tightness and contact assignment: for engine identification characters AGU, ARZ → Chapter, for the other engine identification characters → Chapter.
