t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-
  Note
t  The test box -V.A.G 1598/31- is designed in such a way that it can be simultaneously connected to the wiring loom of the engine control unit and to the actual engine control unit.
t  The advantage being that the electronic engine control remains fully operational with the test box connected (e.g. measuring signals while the engine is running).
t  Refer to the relevant test procedures to determine whether the control unit is connected to the test box or not.
t  For connecting measuring equipment (e.g. diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B-, handheld multimeter -V.A.G 1526 A - etc.) always use the adapter cable set e.g. -V.A.G 1594 A-
t  The contact numbers of the connector of the control unit and the socket numbers of the test box are identical.
  WARNING
To avoid damaging the electronic components, switch on the relevant measuring range before connecting the measuring cables and comply with the test conditions.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Unscrew windscreen wiper arms and remove cover of plenum chamber → Body Fitting Work; Rep. Gr.66.
–  Release the connector locks and unplug the control unit connectors.

–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to connector of wiring loom. The earth clip should be connected to the test box and to battery. Whether the engine control unit remains connected to the test box or not, is described in the relevant test procedures.
–  Perform test as described in the relevant repair sequences.
  Note
t  After re-connecting the engine control unit perform the following:
t  Adapt engine control unit to throttle valve control unit → Chapter 24-4.
t  Interrogate and if necessary erase fault memory → Chap. 01-1, Interrogate and erase fault memory.
t  Whenever the fault memory is erased, it is necessary to generate a readiness code → Chap. 01-4.
