Check lambda probe heater
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-
t  Hand-held multimeter e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A-
t  Current flow diagram
Test condition
l  The fuse no. 43 is o.k.
Test sequence
The heating circuit of the lambda probe is monitored by the self-diagnosis.
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.

–  Disconnect the 4-pin plug conenction on the underside of the vehicle on right next to the lambda probe -G39-.
  WARNING
To avoid damaging the electronic components, switch on the relevant measuring range before connecting the measuring cables and comply with the test conditions.
  S24-0154
–  Perform continuity test (resistance measurement) between the contacts 1 and 2 of the plug using -V.A.G1526A -.
  Note
At ambient temperature the heating element resistance if of approx. 1 to 5 Ω. The resistance increases considerably even if the temperature rises only slightly.
–  Replace the lambda probe -G39- if an open circuit is detected.
If there is continuity in the heating element, check the power supply of the lambda probe heater -Z19- as follows:
  S24-0184
–  Connect multimeter -V.A.G1526A- or -V.A.G 1527 - between the contacts 1 and 2 of the plug at wiring loom.
–  Operate starter briefly (while doing so, the engine can also start).
Specified value: approx. battery voltage.
–  If the nominal value is not reached, test the wiring of contact 1 of the plug at wiring loom to fuse for open circuit and/or short circuit to earth or if necessary repair.
  S24-0248
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/22 - at wiring loom to the engine control unit → Chapter.
–  Test wiring of contact 2 of plug at wiring loom to contact 27 of the test box for continuity, if necessary eliminate line interruption.
If the fuses and the wiring are o.k. but nevertheless the nominal value is not achieved, check engine control unit as follows:
–  Connect multimeter between “positive terminal” of the battery and contact 2 of plug for lambda probe at wiring loom.
–  Operate starter briefly (while doing so, the engine can also start).
Specified value: approx. battery voltage.
–  If the nominal value is not reached, replace the engine control unit → Chapter.
–  If the nominal value is reached, test fuel pump relay → Chapter.
