Properties of the self-diagnosis
The control unit -J220- for the injection and ignition system Motronic is equipped with a fault memory. The fault memory is designed as a permanent memory and as a volatile memory.
If malfunctions occur in the monitored sensors or components, they are stored in the fault memory with indication of the fault type.
After it has analysed the information the engine control unit has different faults → Chapter between 67 to choose from, which are then stored until the fault memory contents are erased.
Faults which occur only occasionally (sporadically), are marked as “sporadically occurring faults” with the suffix “/SP”. Possible causes of sporadic faults are e.g. a loose contact or a momentary line interruption. If a sporadic fault no longer occurs after 50 engine starts, it is erased from the fault memory.
The stored faults can be read out with vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- or fault read-out scan tool - V.A.G 1551- → Chapter.
After the fault(s) has(have) been removed the fault memory must be erased → Chapter.
  Note
t  The following description applies only for vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- used in combination with program card version 5.0.
t  If “Info in literature” appears in the display, look for the text required in the fault table under the fault code.
t  The use of fault read-out scan tool -V.A.G 1551 - (with program card version 8.0) with integrated printer is similar. A minor deviation on the display read-out is possible.
