Replacing valve stem seal
Replacing valve stem seal
(with cylinder head installed)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Pressure hose -MP 1-210-
t  Valve lever -MP 1-211- with pressure plate
t  Assembly device -MP 1-213 -
t  Blank holder for valve spring - MP 1-229-
t  Pressure plate -MP 1-229/1 -
t  Extractor -MP 1-230-
t  Insertion tool -MP 1-233-
t  Spark plug wrench
Removing
–  Remove camshafts → Chapter.
–  Remove bucket tappets (do not interchange) and lay aside with the contact surface facing down.
–  Unscrew the spark plugs.
–  Position piston of the relevant cylinder in bottom dead centre.
Outlet side

–  Insert the assembly device -MP 1-213- and adjust bearing to the stay bolt height.
  Note
For installing the assembly device -MP 1-213- on the outlet side, the stud bolts on the outlet side have to be removed.
–  Screw the pressure hose -MP 1-210- into the spark plug thread and apply constant pressure of at least 0.6 MPa in the cylinder.
–  Remove valve springs with valve lever -MP 1-211-.
  Note
If valve collets are tight, slacken with slight blows of a hammer on the valve lever.
  S15-0081
–  Pull off valve stem seals with extractor -MP 1-230-.
Inlet side
  S15-0067
The inlet valves have different installation angles in the cylinder head The blank holder -MP 1-229- indicates two different positions:
t  1 - upper position, for the middle inlet valve
t  2 - lower position, for both outer inlet valves
t  3 - threaded bores, in which one M6x25 screw is screwed in on the left and right, which are used to attach the blank holder to the cylinder head.
  S15-0070
–  Attach blank holder -MP 1-229- on the inlet side with both M6x25 screws to the cylinder head.
–  Screw the pressure hose -MP 1-210- into the spark plug thread and apply constant pressure of at least 0.6 MPa in the cylinder.
–  Adjust position for the corresponding inlet valve.
–  Press valve springs with threaded spindle and pressure plate -MP 1-229/1- downwards and remove.
  Note
If valve collets are tight, slacken with slight blows of a hammer on the valve lever.
  S15-0069
–  Pull off valve stem seals with extractor -MP 1-230-.
Installing (inlet and outlet side)
  S15-0067
–  To avoid damaging the new valve stem seals insert plastic bushing -A- on the valve stem.
–  Lightly oil sealing lip of the valve stem seal.
–  Insert valve stem seal -B- into the insertion tool -MP 1-233- and carefully push onto the valve guide.
  Note
Lightly oil the valve stem before beginning the assembly work when replacing inlet and outlet valves.
–  Install camshafts → Chapter.
  Note
t  After installing the camshafts, the engine must not be started for about 30 minutes. The hydraulic clearance compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves would strike the pistons).
t  After carrying out work on the valve gear, carefully crank engine at least 2 revolutions to ensure that no valve touches the piston when the engine is started.
