Removing and installing the fuel tank

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fuel suction device, e.g. -VAS 5190-
t  Engine/gearbox jack, e.g. -V.A.G 1383 A -
Condition
l  Ignition is switched off and ignition key is withdrawn.
l  The fuel tank must not be more than 1/4 full.
Removing
  Note
t  Safety precautions when working on the fuel supply system → Chapter.
t  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
–  Empty fuel tank with fuel extraction device, e.g. -VAS 5190 -.
–  Remove rear axle: → Chassis; Rep. Gr.42.
–  Fold right rear seat forwards → Body Work; Rep. Gr.72.
–  Unscrew the cover of the fuel gauge sender.
–  Disconnect plug for fuel gauge.
–  Remove filler flap unit with rubber sleeve → Body Work; Rep. Gr.55.
–  Remove the rear right wheelhouse liner → Body Work; Rep. Gr.66.
–  Release 2 screws for tank filler neck from wheelhouse.
   
–  Remove cover below the fuel tank -arrows- (not fitted to all vehicles).
–  Disconnect 2 right front fuel hoses at fuel tank:
  A20-0090
–  To do so press down the buttons on the hose couplings -arrows-.
t  black = intake hose
t  blue = return-flow hose
–  Position engine/gearbox jack, e.g. -V.A.G 1383 A -, below the fuel tank for support.

–  Detach bolted connections -arrows- at front left and at the retaining straps.
–  Lower the fuel tank.
Install
–  Refit heat shield from the old fuel tank onto the new fuel tank.
