Testing oil pressure and oil pressure switch
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Oil pressure tester (e. g. -V.A.G 1342 -)
t  Diode test lamp (e.g. -V.A.G 1527 -)
t  Measuring tool set (e.g. -V.A.G 1594-)
t  Current flow diagram
Function of dynamic oil pressure warning system
Inspect warning lights
The oil pressure warning light flashes after the ignition is switched on (“terminal 15 on”) and the engine is not running.
Warning criteria
l  The engine is stopped and the oil pressure switch is closed.
l  Coolant temperature above 60 °C, engine speed above 1500 rpm and oil pressure switch is opened.
l  Coolant temperature below 60 °C, engine speed above 300 rpm and oil pressure switch is opened.
l  An active oil pressure warning will not be extinguished for engine speeds above 5000 rpm independently of the condition of the oil pressure switch.
l  If the voltage supply of the control unit is O.K. (terminal 15) and the oil pressure switch at an engine speed above 1500 rpm is opened for longer than 0.5 seconds, it is stored. If this condition occurs more than three times during “terminal 15 on” then the warning will remain active also for engine speed below 1300 rpm.
Test conditions
l  Engine oil level o.k., test → Octavia.
l  Oil pressure warning light -K3- must light up briefly when switching on the ignition.
l  Engine oil temperature at least 80°C (radiator fan must have run once).
Testing oil pressure switch
–  Detach cable from oil pressure switch.

–  Unscrew oil pressure switch and screw in oil pressure tester (e.g. -V.A.G 1342 -).
–  Screw oil pressure switch into the tester -V.A.G 1342 -.
–  Connect brown cable of tester to earth (-).
–  Connect diode test lamp (e. g. -V.A.G 1527-) to oil pressure switch -2- and battery positive (+).
–  Start engine and slowly increase engine speed.
–  The LED must come on at an overpressure of 0.075 to 0.105 MPa (0.75 to 1.05 bar). The oil pressure switch must be replaced if it does not come on.
Testing oil pressure
–  Unscrew oil pressure switch and -V.A.G 1342- screw in.
–  Screw oil pressure switch into - V.A.G 1342-.
–  Start engine (engine oil temperature at least 80°C).
t  Oil pressure when engine idling: at least 0.1 MPa (1.0 bar)
t  Oil pressure at 2000 turn/rpm: at least 0.2 MPa (2.0 bar)
At a higher engine speed the oil pressure must not be greater than 0.7 MPa (7.0 bar). Otherwise replace oil pump cover with pressure relief valve.
