Properties of the self-diagnosis
The engine control unit is equipped with a fault memory. The fault memory is designed as a permanent memory and as a volatile memory.
If malfunctions occur in the monitored sensors or components, they are stored in the fault memory with indication of the fault type.
The engine control unit analyses the fault information → Chapter and stores this fault until the fault memory content is erased.
Faults which occur only occasionally (sporadically), are marked as “sporadic” with the suffix “SP”. Possible causes of sporadic faults are e.g. a loose contact or a momentary line interruption. If a sporadic fault no longer occurs after 50 engine starts, it is automatically erased from the fault memory.
The stored faults can be read out with the diagnostic unit -V.A.G 1552- or -V.A.G 1551-, or -VAS 5051- → Chapter.
After the fault(s) has(have) been removed the fault memory must be erased → Chapter.
  Note
t  The following description applies only for vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- used in combination with program card version 5.0.
t  If “Info in literature” appears in the display of the vehicle system tester, look for the text required in the fault table under the fault code.
t  The use of fault read-out scan tool -V.A.G 1551- (with program card version 8.0) with integrated printer or - VAS 5051- is similar. A minor deviation on the display read-out is possible.
