Checking the fuel tank venting

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390-

t	Vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-

Test sequence

–	Detach the vent line -2- from the throttle valve control unit -3-.

–	Connect the hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- at the line -2- to the activated charcoal filter -1-.

–	Separate the vent line -5- from the fuel tank at the quick coupling and connect with the connection -A- of the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-.

–	Connect the vent line -4- to the activated charcoal filter -1- with the connection -B- of the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-.

–	Move vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- into position -B-.

–	Activate solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter -N80- → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

–	Operate the hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- several times:

l	No vacuum should build up.

If a vacuum builds up.

–	Check the ventilation connection -6- on the activated charcoal filter -1- for dirt and clean as required.

If no vacuum builds up:

–	Unscrew the cap from the fuel filler neck.

–	Connect the hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- to the connection -B- of the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-.

–	Move vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- into position -A/B-.

–	Operate the hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- several times:

l	No vacuum should build up.

If a vacuum builds up.

–	Checking the gravity valve → Chapter.

–	Check the vent line -1- from the fuel tank for blockage.

If no vacuum builds up:

–	Screw the screw cap onto the fuel filler neck.

–	Operate the hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- several times:

l	No vacuum should build up.

Note

The hand vacuum pump will have to be actuated at least 20...30 times when there is little fuel in the fuel tank.

If a vacuum builds up.

–	Replace screw cap of fuel filler neck.
