Removing and installing the starter
Removing
–  Remove battery → Chapter and battery carrier → Chapter.
   
–  Vehicles with the earth strap attached to the fixing screw of the starter - release nut -1- and disconnect the earth strap.
–  Unplug connector -2-.
–  Remove plastic cap and unscrew cable -3- (terminal 30) from the solenoid switch.
Vehicles fitted with a manual gearbox
–  Remove the sound dampening system → Body Work; Rep. gr.50.

–  Unscrew nut -1- and lay aside line holder -2- together with line. If necessary pull out the plug for the reversing lights -3-.
–  Slacken gearbox 02T - gearshift lever and raise slightly → Gearbox; Rep. gr.34.
All vehicles
  S34-0783
–  Unscrew screws -arrows- (80 Nm) and remove starter -1-.
Install
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the following points:

Always use new self-locking nuts -1- and -3- for attaching the earth strap and the positive cable, see → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts.
Tightening torques for positive cable and earth strap:
Pos. -1- earth strap - 20 Nm
Pos. -3- positive cable:
t  Starter with copper screw 16 Nm
t  Starter with steel screw 20 Nm
–  Pay attention to the work sequence when connecting the battery → Chapter.
