Inspecting electrolyte level
Inspecting electrolyte level
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Battery filling bottle e.g. - VAS 5045-

An external check on the electrolyte level can be made on the on batteries with recognisable “Min.” and “Max.” markings on the battery housing.
What to do if there are no “Min.” and “Max.” markings on the battery housing or the electrolyte level cannot be read:
–  Switch off the ignition and all electrical components.
–  Unscrew battery plugs.
–  This will allow you to see inside the battery and observe the condition of the electrolyte.
–  Always use a torch to illuminate the inside of the battery.
–  Check the condition of the electrolyte visually.

–  The level of the electrolyte is OK when it covers the electrolyte level marking -1-.
–  Distilled water should be added from the battery filling bottle -VAS 5045- up to “Max.” when the electrolyte level is too low.
–  Excess battery acid must be removed by suction if the electrolyte level is too high using a commercially available acid removal device.
–  The battery cells must then be closed off again by just using the original battery plugs once the filling up or removal operations have been completed.
  Note
Only use original battery plugs of the same type if those from the battery get damaged or lost. The battery plugs must be fitted with an O-ring seal.
