1.
SOA 203 083 - LONE STAR SYSTEM
The Diesel - Kiki compressor and clutch assembly (SOA 203 736) used on Subaru air conditioners SOA 203 083 is not field serviceable. The entire
compressor and clutch assembly must be replaced if a failure occurs to any of the component parts.
2.
SOA 204 083 OR LINE INSTALLED - HITACHI SYSTEM
The MJS 170 compressor used on Subaru air conditioners SOA 204 083 and the line installed system has a field serviceable compressor and
clutch assembly. Table 1 lists part numbers for replacement parts.

Claims for replacing the compressor and clutch as an assembly, SOA 254 727, will not be accepted unless both component parts have failed. In all cases,
only the failed component part must be replaced.
The clutch on the MJS 170 compressor can be removed by following the procedure stated below in place of the procedure outlined on page 13-31 of the
1983 Subaru Service Manual (MSA-116).
1.
Remove the compressor from the vehicle according to the procedure on pages 13-30 and 13-31 of the 1983 Subaru Service Manual (MSA-116).
2.
Hold the clutch hub from turning with the clutch spanner wrench (SOA 624 878). Remove the 13 mm hex head nut from the compressor shaft with
a 13 mm socket wrench. (See Figure 1).
