Grand Vitara 2WD V6-3.2L (2010)
Jump Starting: Service and Repair
Jump Starting in Case of Emergency
With Booster Battery
CAUTION: If vehicle is a manual transaxle model and has a catalytic converter, do not push or tow it to start. Damage to its emission control
system and/or to other components may result.
Both booster and discharged battery should be handled carefully when using jumper cables. Follow the procedure outlined below, being careful not to
cause sparks.
WARNING:
-
Failure to observe these precaution and procedure described below could result in:
-
Serious personal injury (particularly to eyes) or property damage from such causes as battery explosion, battery acid or electrical burns.
-
Damage to electronic components of either vehicle.
-
Remove rings, watches and other jewelry. Be sure to wear approved eye protection.
-
Be careful not to allow metal tools or jumper cables to contact positive (+) battery terminal and any other metal on vehicle, because a short circuit
could occur.
-
Do not connect jumper cable directly to negative (-) terminal of dead battery.
1. For 4 A/T model and 5 A/T model, place select lever in P and apply parking brake before starting the engine.
For 5 M/T model, place gear shift lever in Neutral and apply parking brake before starting the engine.
2. Turn off ignition, lights and all other electrical loads.
3. For battery that cell caps are equipped, check electrolyte level. If it is below low level line, add distilled water.
4. Attach one of jumper cable terminals to positive (+) terminal of booster battery and other terminal of same cable to positive (+) terminal of
discharged battery. (Use 12-volt battery only to jump start engine).
5. Attach one of remaining jumper cable terminals to negative (-) terminal of booster battery, and other terminal of same cable to solid engine ground
(such as exhaust manifold) at least 45 cm (18 in.) away from battery of vehicle.
6. Start engine of vehicle with booster battery and turn off electrical accessories. Then start engine of vehicle with discharged battery.
7. Disconnect jumper cables in exact reverse order.
With Charging Equipment
CAUTION: When jump starting engine with charging equipment, be sure the equipment is for 12-volt battery and negative (-) ground system.
Do not use 24-volt charging equipment. Using such equipment can cause serious damage to electrical system or electronic parts.
