Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Axle

Vehicles W/Coil Springs

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

2.

Disconnect driveshaft at companion flange and secure it to vehicle using wire.

3.

Remove wheels and brake drums. Then rear anti-lock speed sensor, if equipped.

4.

Support axle housing with floor jack.

5.

Disconnect brake lines, cables and vents from axle housing.

6.

Disconnect shock absorbers and upper control arm mountings from axle housing.

7.

Lower axle housing slowly, until coil springs are released. Remove coil springs.

8.

Disconnect lower control arms from axle housing, then remove housing from vehicle.

9.

Reverse procedure to install.

Vehicles W/Leaf Springs

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

2.

Disconnect driveshaft at companion flange and secure it to vehicle using wire.

3.

Remove wheels and brake drums. Then rear anti-lock speed sensor, if equipped.

4.

Support axle housing with floor jack.

5.

Disconnect brake lines, cables and vents from axle housing.

6.

Disconnect shock absorbers and leaf spring U-bolts from axle housing.

7.

Remove leaf spring I-bolts and remove leaf springs from vehicle.

8.

Remove axle housing from vehicle.

9.

Reverse procedure to install.
