TITLE 4X4 AND 4-RUNNER STRIPE DECAL DIAGNOSIS AND REPLACEMENT

This bulletin supersedes the previous 4X4 and 4-Runner Stripe Decal Diagnosis and Replacement TSB, Reference Number 009 (Accessories), Volume
VII, dated 10/22/84.

This bulletin contains revised information that will reduce the decal removal time. To be effective, the entire bulletin must be read and followed or
excessive decal removal time will result.

Condition

Top clearcoat breakdown, color fade and brown spots on some 1984 4X4 and 4-Runner SR5 hood decals.

In 1984 two suppliers manufactured stripes for Toyota's 4x4 Trucks and 4-Runners. One of the manufacturers supplied stripe decals to all of the TMD
regions while the other supplied them to the Private Distributors.

Only stripe decals installed on 1984 4X4 and 4-Runner models in TMD regions are experiencing the above condition.. Private Distributors may not be
affected by this condition unless a vehicle which originated in a TMD region has relocated to a Private Distributor area.

Cause

Heat from the engine and the sun's ultraviolet rays, combined with possible exposure of the decal to a high industrial fallout area, have caused some
decals to develop top clear coat breakdown, color fade and brown spots.

Correction

Check the condition of the hood stripe decal. If the hood stripe appears to exhibit a rough surface, grain pattern, brown spots or color fade, replace all of
the stripes on the vehicle to maintain color consistency.

Stripe Replacement Procedures

It will be necessary to use the 3M Woodgrain and Stripe Remover (#08907) and 3M Woodgrain and Stripe Adhesive Remover (#08908) to remove the
entire 4X4 stripe graphic on the vehicle. All of these removal materials come with the replacement stripe kit. Please refer to Warranty Bulletin #85-11
(05/13/85) and PANT Bulletin #AC-038 regarding ordering procedures for the kit as well as claim preparation procedures.
The following are some important facts to remember prior to starting the stripe removal process:

To insure maximum efficiency in removing decals, do not allow the decal remover or the adhesive remover to dry on the panel. The times
given in these instructions allow both products to remain moist at all times both between spray applications and while scraping with the
plastic squeegee.

Do not work outside, in direct sunlight or in extreme heat as this will cause premature drying of the chemicals and render the product
ineffective.

^

Do not use the decal remover or adhesive remover in confined areas or  areas with little or no air movement unless you employ means to
circulate air and prevent vapor build-up. Avoid breathing vapor and overspray.

^

Do not spray more than one body panel ahead of the work panel. The remover must not be allowed to dry on the paint surface.

^

Use only the plastic squeegee supplied with the "removal kit".

^

Hold aerosol cans 6" from the panel surface when applying both the decal and adhesive remover.

^

Completely mask "Toyota" decal to prevent damage to that decal by the chemicals.

^

Do not start using adhesive remover #08908 until all decals have been removed from all body panels (including the hood).
