Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Testing and Inspection
Component Inspection

Thermo Switch

The following applies to thermo switch No. 1 used on 1985-88 Pickup and 4Runner California models.

1.

Drain coolant from radiator, then remove thermo switch from intake manifold.

2.

Cool thermo switch to below 109°F and ensure continuity exists between terminal and switch body.

3.

Heat thermo switch to above 131°F in water and ensure continuity does not exist between terminal and switch body.

4.

Replace switch if tests are not satisfactory.

5.

Apply suitable sealant to switch threads and install switch.

The following procedure applies to thermo switch No. 2.

1.

Drain coolant from radiator, then remove thermo switch from intake manifold.

2.

Cool thermo switch to below 43°F and ensure continuity exists between terminal and switch body.

3.

Heat thermo switch to above 64°F in water and ensure continuity does not exist between terminal and switch body.

4.

Replace switch if tests are not satisfactory.

5.

Apply suitable sealant to switch threads and install switch.

MEASURE RESISTANCE OF WATER TEMPERATURE SENSOR

(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between both terminals.

Resistance: Refer to the chart
