NOTE:

Up to four remotes can be programmed to operate each vehicle.

NOTE:

The '98 Avalon Repair Manual (RM598U) is incorrect, as on page BE-86 there is reference to an Add and Prohibition mode, which does not
exist. For corrections to the '98 Avalon Repair Manual and detailed Information, refer to TSB PG003-99 or the '99 Avalon Repair Manual
(RM565U), otherwise use the following procedure for successful programming:

To access either mode, start off by having the:

Key out of the ignition

^

Driver's door open and unlocked

NOTE:

Avoid pausing between steps 1-7. Programming the first remote should take approximately 45 seconds.

1.

Insert (do not rotate), then remove key from the ignition switch.

2.

At the Master Switch on the driver's door, use an even pace and actuate the power door lock rocker switch to obtain five LOCK/UNLOCK
cycles in less than ten seconds.

NOTE:

One cycle equals a lock command followed by an unlock command.

3.

Close, then open the driver's door.

4.

Repeat the LOCK/UNLOCK sequence as described in step 2.

5.

Insert key and cycle the ignition switch LOCK/ON/LOCK

a.

Two times to request Rewrite mode

b.

Three times to request Confirmation mode

6.

Remove key from ignition switch.

a.

If the Rewrite request is recognized, the vehicle will respond by cycling the power door locks LOCK/UNLOCK twice to confirm
Rewrite mode.

b.

If the Confirmation mode is recognized, the vehicle will respond by cycling the power door locks LOCK/UNLOCK from 1 to 4 times
to indicate how many remotes are currently registered. If no remotes are registered the door locks will cycle 5 times.

If there is no response, return to step number 1 and try again.

7.

If Rewrite mode has been confirmed, as in Step 6a:

a.

Depress, then release, any button on one remote.

b.

Depress, then release, any button on the same remote again. The vehicle will respond by cycling the power door locks
LOCK/UNLOCK:

Once to confirm if the remote was registered. Twice to indicate an incomplete or erroneous procedure.

When adding an additional remote(s), repeat Steps 7a and 7b for each remote.

C.

Rewrite mode is terminated if one of the following occurs:

More than 20 seconds have elapsed since Step 7b.

^

The driver's door is closed.

^

The key is inserted in the ignition switch.

^

Four remotes have been registered.
