Alternator: Testing and Inspection
Alternator Voltage & Ampere Output
With battery in a proper state of charge, terminal voltage reading should be as indicated in Alternator & Regulator Specification chart. Ampere
reading should be no more than 10 amps.
1.
If voltage reading is greater than specified in Alternator & Regulator Specification chart under Voltage Regulator Voltage, replace regulator.
2.
If voltage is less than specified, proceed as follows:
Fig. 4 Removing brush holder assembly
a. Remove brush holder and connect terminal B and E wires to their original position, Fig. 4. Before connecting terminal B, ensure that
battery ground cable is disconnected.
Fig. 5 Grounding terminal F. Diesel engine
b. With engine running at 2000 RPM, ground terminal F, Fig. 5. Check reading on voltmeter.
c. If voltage reading is less than specified, alternator is defective. If voltage reading is greater than specified, replace regulator.
