August, 1986
Dear Toyota Owner:
Toyota will initiate a service campaign to inspect the ignition system on all 1983 and 1984 model year Camrys and 1984 model year Vans.
This inspection is to determine if the igniter unit on your vehicle is part of a suspected group and if it is, to replace the igniter unit. The igniter unit
provides the on/off switching of the electrical energy to the spark plugs and may malfunction on some of the vehicles resulting in a failure to start the
engine.
Consistent with Toyota's continuing interest in your
satisfaction and to prevent this problem from occurring on
your vehicle, we urgently request that you call your dealer
to arrange for the inspection of your vehicle. Toyota will
inspect and, if necessary, replace the igniter unit at no
cost to you.
Approximately 30 minutes on Camry and 80
minutes on Van will be required for this inspection and/or replacement of the igniter, but additional time may be necessary depending on your dealer's
schedule.
Your Toyota dealer is equipped with all of the tools and trained technicians to conduct this campaign quickly and accurately. If, however, you feel that
the dealer has failed to remedy the defect within a reasonable time, please contact your nearest Toyota Distributor office listed on the back of this letter.
Even if you already have had this unit replaced, you should still take advantage of this inspection to ensure that an improved igniter had been installed.
Additionally, if you had to pay for the igniter's replacement, simply present evidence of such expenses to your Toyota dealer for reimbursement
consideration.
Our records indicate that you own one of the subject vehicles. However, if you no longer own the vehicle, please complete the enclosed postage-paid
card providing us with the name and the address of the new owner.
We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you, and we thank you for driving a Toyota.
Sincerely, TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC. Corporate Service Department
