Temperature Gauge: Testing and Inspection

1.

Ensure gauges fuse is not blown and has voltage passing through it.

2.

Disconnect temperature sending unit.

3.

Ground the terminal through a 3.4 Watt bulb.

4.

Turn ignition switch on. Ensure the bulb starts flashing within seconds and the water temperature gauge needle deflects.

5.

If test is not as specified, proceed.

6.

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals of the gauge.

A - B

Approximately 55 ohms

A - C

Approximately 145 ohms

B - C

Approximately 200 ohms

7.

If resistance is not as above, replace temperature gauge.

8.

Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between the terminal of the sending unit and ground.

Yazaki Sender:
140°F (60°C)

Approximately 152 ohms

239°F (115°C)

Approximately 26 ohms

Nippondenso Sender:
122°F (50°C)

Approximately 226 ohms

239°F (115°C)

Approximately 26 ohms

9.

If resistance is not within specification, replace temperature sending unit.
