SERVICE TIP

A131L, A14#E, A14#L Drive pinion preload:

After installing the counter driven gear, it is essential that proper bearing preload is obtained.

To avoid excessive preload of the counter driven gear during installation, a lower initial torque setting of 80 ft.lb. is suggested rather than the 127 ft.lb.
shown in your 1986 repair manuals.
AE(FF):

As a second countermeasure to reduce counter gear noise on front drive Corolla only, a two-piece speedometer cable has been adopted in production.
