Constant Velocity Joint: Service and Repair

Left Hand Side

1.

Remove dust cover and fender apron seal.

2.

Drain out approximately 1 quart of transaxle fluid.

3.

Remove left hand driveshaft as described under ``Speed Sensor, Replace.''

4.

Remove speed sensor as described under ``Speed Sensor, Replace.''

5.

Using tool SST 09350-32010 or equivalent, drive out side gear shaft.

6.

Remove side bearing retainer.

7.

Press oil seal out of retainer, and using tool SST 09359-32010 or equivalent, press in new seal to depth of .106 inch.

8.

Coat lip of oil seal with suitable grease.

9.

Clean bolt and case threads of side bearing retainer attaching bolts, coat threads of bolts with suitable sealer, and torque bolts to 14 ft. lbs.

10.

Using tool SST 09520-32010 or equivalent, drive in side gear shaft until it contacts pinion shaft.

11.

Install speed sensor as described under ``Speed Sensor, Replace.''

12.

Install driveshaft as described under ``Speed Sensor, Replace.''

13.

Fill transaxle with approximately 1 quart of transaxle fluid.

Right Hand Side

1.

Remove fender apron seal.

2.

Drain approximately 1 quart of transaxle fluid from transaxle.

3.

Remove driveshaft and intermediate shaft as follows: 

a. Remove cotter pin, dust cover and bearing locknut.
b. Loosen 6 nuts attaching driveshaft to intermediate shaft flange.
c. Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle and secure out of way.
d. Remove disc rotor.
e. Using tool SST 09950-20014 or equivalent, pull axle hub from drive shaft.
f.

Remove bearing bracket bolts and bracket from cylinder block.

g. Remove intermediate shaft from universal joint.

4.

Using tools SST 09520-32010 and SST 09520-32030 or equivalents, drive out universal joint.

5.

Using tool SST 09308-00010 or equivalent, drive oil seal from case.

6.

Using tool SST 09350-32010 or equivalent, drive new oil seal into case until surface of seal is flush with surface of case.

7.

Coat lip of seal with suitable grease.

8.

Using tools SST 09520-32010 and SST 09520-32030 or equivalents, drive in universal joint until joint contacts pinion shaft.

9.

Install intermediate shaft and driveshaft as follows: 

a. Install intermediate shaft to universal joint.
b. Install bearing bracket onto cylinder block, torquing 2 bolts to 40 ft. lbs.
c. Install outboard joint side of driveshaft to axle hub.
d. Finger tighten 6 nuts connecting driveshaft to intermediate shaft flange.
e. Install disc rotor.
f.

Install brake caliper to steering knuckle, torquing 2 bolts to 70 ft. lbs.

g. Installing bearing locknut, dust cover and cotter pin, torquing nut to 137 ft. lbs.
h. Torque 6 driveshaft to intermediate shaft flange attaching nuts to 25 ft. lbs.
i.

Fill transaxle with approximately 1 quart of transaxle fluid.

10.

Install fender apron seal.
