Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Camshaft Position Sensor reports Camshaft Position to the Engine Control Module. By overlapping the signal from the Crankshaft Position
Sensor with that of the Camshaft Position Sensor determining very accurate cylinder position is possible. This information is used by the Engine
Control Module to help determine ignition timing / spark advance as well as injection timing.
OPERATION
The Camshaft Position Sensor reads a protrusion on the camshaft. As the protrusion passes under the sensor tip, the sensors magnetic field
collapses and causes a voltage signal. The signal is read by the Engine Control Module.
NOTE: It is important to remember during any testing that the Camshaft Position Sensor signal works in conjunction with the Crankshaft Position
Sensor. For more information, see CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR.
