Camshaft: Service and Repair
1.
On models equipped with airbags, disarm airbag system as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM
DISARMING.
2.
On models less airbags, disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Drain oil and coolant from engine.
4.
Disconnect throttle cable from throttle body, if equipped.
5.
Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
6.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove cruise control actuator and vacuum pump, if equipped.
7.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove air cleaner hose.
8.
On 2VZ-FE engine, raise and support vehicle.
9.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove engine righthand undercover.
10.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove lower suspension crossmember.
11.
On all models, remove front exhaust pipe.
12.
Remove alternator.
13.
On 3VZ-FE engine, remove V-bank cover.
14.
On all models, remove ISC valve.
15.
Remove throttle body and EGR pipe.
16.
Remove EGR valve and vacuum modulator.
17.
Remove vacuum pipe.
18.
Remove distributor.
19.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove exhaust crossover pipe.
20.
On 3VZ-FE engine, remove emission control valve set, then disconnect lefthand wire harness electrical connectors.
21.
On 3VZ-FE engine, remove cylinder head rear plate, then water outlet.
22.
On 3VZ-FE engine, disconnect brake booster vacuum hose, power steering air hose, PCV hose, and EGR water bypass hose.
23.
On all models, disconnect cold start injector connector.
24.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove cold start injector tube.
25.
On all models, remove air intake chamber.
26.
Remove fuel delivery pipes and injectors.
27.
On 3VZ-FE engine, remove No. 1 cooler, then disconnect and remove righthand engine wire harness.
28.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove water outlet.
29.
On all models, remove water bypass outlet.
30.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove cylinder head rear plate.
31.
On all models, remove intake manifold.
32.
Remove righthand rear exhaust manifold.
33.
Remove lefthand exhaust manifold.
34.
On 3VZ-FE engine, remove oil dipstick assembly and spark plugs.
35.
On all models, remove timing belt, camshaft timing pulleys (sprockets) and No. 2 idler pulley (sprocket) as outlined under TIMING BELT.
36.
Remove No. 3 timing belt cover.
37.
Remove cylinder head covers.
38.
On 2VZ-FE engine, remove spark plug tube gaskets.
39.
On all models, remove camshafts, as follows: Since the thrust clearance of the camshafts is small, the camshaft must be held level while it is
being removed.
a. Remove exhaust camshaft from righthand cylinder head. Align the timing marks (two pointed marks) on the camshaft drive and driven gears
by turning the camshaft with a wrench.
b. Secure the exhaust camshaft sub-gear to the driven using an attaching bolt.
