Timing Chain: Service and Repair
22R, 22R-E & 22R-TE ENGINES
Removal
1.
Remove cylinder head as described under ``Cylinder Head, Replace.''
2.
Remove radiator, oil pan and all drive belts.
3.
Remove air pump (if equipped), A/C compressor and bracket, alternator adjuster bracket, cooling fan, water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley.
4.
Remove water bypass tube, then on all except turbo models, heater water outlet tube. On turbo models, remove turbo coolant pipe of engine.
5.
Remove timing cover bolts, then using plastic mallet, loosen timing cover and remove.
6.
Remove chain from damper, then remove camshaft sprocket and chain.
7.
Remove oil pump drive spline, then the camshaft sprocket. If spline and sprocket cannot be removed by hand, use a suitable puller.

Installation
1.
Rotate crankshaft until keyway is at TDC. Install sprocket onto crankshaft, then install chain onto sprocket with light colored link aligned with
sprocket timing mark, Fig. 120.

2.
Install chain onto camshaft sprocket with sprocket timing mark between two light colored links, Fig. 121.
3.
Slide oil pump drive spline over crankshaft and key. If installation is difficult, drive spline on with hammer and suitable socket.
4.
Install timing cover gasket, then the timing cover. Torque 8 mm bolts to 10 ft. lbs. and 10 mm bolts to 31 ft. lbs.
5.
Install crankshaft pulley and torque bolt 116 ft. lbs. Do not rotate crankshaft while tightening bolt.
6.
Install water bypass tube, then on all except turbo models, heater water outlet tube. On turbo models, install turbo coolant pipe.
7.
Install air pump (if equipped), A/C compressor and bracket, alternator adjuster bracket, cooling fan, water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley.
8.
Install cylinder head as described under ``Cylinder Head, Replace.''
9.
Install radiator, oil pan and all drive belts.
